View Full Version : Burned Woods

No.6

Some few remnants of the grognard EQ community may remember the old "Burned Woods" gag.

Apparently it's alive and roaming the halls of SOE-San Diego as their April Fool's Day patch message reads in part:

*** Zones ***

- Fixed the door that leads into Sverag, Stronghold of Rage.
- Burned Woods has been moved. We'll leave it up to you to find out where it went.
- Halflings have been kicked out of Rivervale. Their new home is in Runnyeye... yeah, that's where it is.

I'll leave it to someone else to describe their 'new character model.' I guess here it would be called 'poopy' hehehe.

Any one have a link to that old story? Some of my guildies in EQ2 dont get it when us old timers talk about the Burned Woods.

Well, I don't know about the old Fools Day patch notes, but I did find this gem of a story (http://ancarett.com/eqhumour.html).

I suspect that the Burned Woods thing may be immortalized on the Station's forums, but they are down for maintenance until 11 am, PDT.

The fun part is, this isn't a website gag, I grabbed this off of the EQ Patcher:

EDIT: I found the full Patch notes here : http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/game_updates.vm?date=mostrecent

A view of the patch in patcher: http://www.stormhammer.org/images/nala_pics/EQPatcher.jpg

And a larger image, one of the character select screen. (http://www.stormhammer.org/images/nala_pics/eqlogin.jpg) Yes, those models are carried into the gameworld as well.

The official writeup: http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/news_article.vm?id=50397

Happy 4/1, its nice to see the live team having some fun.

Meanwhile, WoW's 4/1 "joke/not-a-joke" seems to be backfiring a bit.

EQLive released a 'patch' for the forums as well with this update message ( http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/posts/list.m?topic_id=109539 ).

Board rankings were similarly updated (to various school grades. :)

Um... they put "laboratory" in the zones section, and I strongly suspect they meant "lavatory." Who ever heard of camping stalls in a lab?

And someone who commented on SoW being nerfed due to "no running in the halls" is under the impression that all schools are indoors. Nearly every school I ever attended was open air. Probably because it doesn't snow here.

LOL, good to see they are bringing EQ1-style quests to WoW:

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/btattunement/

That right there looks like about the first 4 steps of the 14 step Breakdown In Communications (http://robbiem01.tripod.com/everquest/Breakdown.html) quest from EQ1 Gates of Discord. Too bad Blizzard is just joking.

Anybody else remember planar progression? And remember to remind people that it's ALL contested raid mobs (well, nearly 100%) plus some farming in various spots (BoT key, etc).

LOL that's awesome! Me and some RL friends created a guild in EQ2 when it first started called Burned Woods. :) It isn't active anymore, but we still use it for alt storage. We just loved the name and couldn't let it die.

YEY for Burned Woods!

At one time there was a part 2 to the Burned Woods story, and was told from the point of view of the cleric who rez'd the wizard in Felwithe, but I can't find it now! It was great.

But WWWAAADDD really is probably the funniest EQ thing I've ever read. I laughed over that so hard my sides started hurting, and even to this day it makes me giggle out loud.

You know, there's got to be a small army (and not just 'cause they're gnomes) of people who've named themselves WWWAAAAADDDD or some variation because of that story.

Im confused, what is the WWWAAADDD thing?

Woody
April 3rd, 2007, 12:17 PM
If I had to guess, I'd say it's a reference to using the keyboard to move in a given direction.

Ah you posted before I found it. Heh.

I just went to trusty old Google and found this http://ancarett.com/eqhumour.html

Good read.

I checked out your EQ adventure page and it was a great read. How I miss those days.

In the link I posted earlier in the thread, there were three funny stories.

The last was about a gnome, and yes, the WWWAAADDD did refer to trying to move while in chat mode. It's a pretty amusing story.

That's hilarious, even if it was all made up. Did it really happen?

So funny nonetheless, thanks for sharing :)

EverQuest was the best game I've ever played.

Yes, and the DUCK (Druid Universal Conspiracy to Kill) was another gem I had to preserve:

I'm actually back playing EQ, albeit somewhat casually, with my husband and our eldest daughter. Just dinged our mage, ranger and druid trio up to 15!
