View Full Version : No they're NOT actually changing their name! (8/28)

August 28th, 2006, 01:38 PM
Let me start by saying I kid because I admire. And let me follow that by saying again, Penny-Arcade is NOT changing the name of its site. So, let me explain the comic.

Last night when I was doing my news rounds seeing what was up in game industry news, I found several articles about Penny Arcade over at Gamespot (and beyond). And, it just seems weird to me that a site that formed to poke thumbs in the eyes of the industry are now considered a large enough part of the industry that they're grabbing gaming news headlines themselves. And, where I'm not sure if it's intentional or even if they realize it it but Mike & Jerry (Tycho and Gabe) have pretty much become charicatures of themselves. They've taken what is right and good about PA and exagerated it. Now, there's nothing wrong with that. It seems to be the natural progression of character when founded on the precepts of humor. Look at Jim Carey.

But, I can't escape the odd feeling I get whenever I see news like: Hothead Studios, a gaming start-up company started in March of this year, has acquired exclusive rights to produce games based on Penny Arcade. Their first jaunt into the gaming world will be a series of episodic games that follow Tycho and Gabe through their comic (mis)adventures.
I guess it's one thing in my mind to makes news splashes about projects such as Child's Play (which is an awesome use of the power of PA's readership) and making news splashes about how they're becoming the very thing they comment on.

What I'd like to know is, where would they be without Robert Khoo? He's certainly responsible for the growth and financial success of PA. But, is he responsible for the twisting of their image?

Now, don't take this wrong; I don't begrudge PA their level of success. I think it's freakin' awesome. It's proof that with the right amount of talent and aggressiveness anyone can be a superstar. I feel comfortable poking at the PA guys because:
A. They're good guys.
B. They have a sense of humor about themselves and their site.
C. I respect what they've done with their piece of the internet.

I'm just worried that if they grow too big, they may lose perspective. And the very things I like about PA might get sacrificed in the wild unchecked growth of their IP.

Victim of their own success seems to strike true here. I saw this on Evil Avatar, and knew immediately what the comic was about. Personally, I've never been as big of a fan of PA as GU. PA seemed more... I don't know... trite I guess. Amittedly, some of the comics are hilarious, but overall they just always seemed like the geeks in school who found a few successes, and shove it in everyones face as a "look at me now jock!"

Growing up a geek and becoming successful is one thing. Rubbing it in someones face is different, and I've always had the impression that's what Gabe & Tyche do. Now - I've never actually met either of them so I could be WAY off, but from a casual readers perspective I don't like em.

That doesn't mean I'm gonna change my plans for PAX this year though ;)

August 28th, 2006, 01:52 PM
Haha, I was so confused at first. I'm so used to the "comic" Gabe and Tycho that I had no idea who those guys were. :P I agree with you, though... watching the evolution of Penny Arcade has certainly been interesting. Gotto love those guys... they're just so damned good at what they do!

... "whore-whore.whore"... heheh

August 28th, 2006, 01:55 PM
I was wondering where you were going with this. I can't say I know too much about PA, I have only read a few comments in the past. Now though you have made me delve deeper and I am looking at their forum and see alot of political references I will be reviewing.

As for the comic I think whore-whore.whore is a great name for a site and one I would visit daily.

August 28th, 2006, 01:57 PM
its like the game spore. they're starting off small little beings and growing into a civilation.

August 28th, 2006, 02:30 PM
Ballsy, but I think you covered your bases...but I'm sure GU has been the muse for a few jokes as well.

August 28th, 2006, 02:36 PM
I'm trying desperately to whore myself out, but no one's buying. **grins**

August 28th, 2006, 02:39 PM
how do you make a game based on a videogame based comic? many strips have them playing games, so do you play a game of people playing games?

they stole my old, old idea! a sim game where you collect games then play them in a collection (think megaman X collection or Sonic collection with more games between different kinds castlevania, mario, sonic, megaman, and others, except you need to play minigames and drive around town to buy games/ earn money)

*waves a $20 bill* :D

124,999 more of those and you've got a deal Breandan. **grins**

For me, PA has always been about pointing out whats wrong with the gaming industry (well, at least when the industry was the subject itself). So as long as they don't fail victim to the "wrongs" they've poked fun at over the years, I don't see this as a bad thing at all. Who knows, with some good writing and humor, it could be used an example of how to develop a good game using an existing IP.

August 28th, 2006, 03:23 PM
me has two questions: 1st Woody, why whore yourself out? You'll just end up numb ;) and I dont think Taks would like it very much... :D 2nd what is PAX??? I might be dumb... But then again I'm norwegian...

I love reading Penny Arcade everyday, it really upsets me when the program at work won't let me access it due to banned language. All the more power to them if they can make the transition and keep their perspective.

PAX = Penny Arcade Expo http://www.pennyarcadeexpo.com/index.php

August 28th, 2006, 03:29 PM
"Myself" in the sense that it was presented meant "GU Comics".

August 28th, 2006, 03:45 PM
I've never actually met either of them

Well if you do get the chance to meet them, take it. Mike, Jerry and Robert are all great people as Woody has said. Whether you agree or disagree with what they say and do on their site.

I actually have had the good fortune of meeting them and with my limited dealings with them can say nothing but good things about them.

August 28th, 2006, 04:08 PM
Personally, I'd much rather play a GU Comics game with levels like how many socks can you stuff into Ted's pants, while he plays Guitar Hero, before they explode, or perhaps Ed plots world domination and Woody and Ted must venture out of their apartment (Shock! Horror!) to stop the mass destruction of all humanity...

Just a few thoughts. If you do make a game and use these ideas, feel free. Just give me a line in the game credits, or something so I can feel special! :D

August 28th, 2006, 04:15 PM
I like totalgeeks idea! but how do we fit in the monkey?

August 28th, 2006, 04:17 PM
Ted and I have ventured out of the apartment. It didn't go well.

August 28th, 2006, 05:12 PM
Check out Wednesdays comic at Penny-Arcade. They created it during one of the panels at PAX on Saturday. They know what they are getting into, and are as cool and humble a guys as they are portrayed to be. :)

August 28th, 2006, 05:33 PM
Oh and incidently - I think "WhoreArcade.com" is a great name for a site. *thinks about going to register it*

Fun part about PA is they STILL seem shocked on occasion about how well they are doing...Can't wait to see their 'return shot' to this comic, should be amusing ;)

Heck, the people that called that idiot lawyer's bluff win points for that alone!

August 28th, 2006, 11:30 PM
The PA guys know who I am and what I do, but they do not actively visit the website. So, the chances of retaliation are slim.

It has been submitted that this is NOT the case. I offer my sincerest apologies for an unfair assumption. Much love and more respect.

August 28th, 2006, 11:53 PM
Let me start by saying that I was a volunteer at PAX this year (ow, my feet.) Having spent 3 days helping to organize the chaos and watching how everyone behaved.... I was amazed. We had a lot of sweaty kids (and adults), hyped up on sugar and caffeine, running around the convention center. They stood in line patiently. The didn't argue with us. Things did get out of hand, fights didn't break out. Even when we made them wait longer than usual for certain events, they played along. It was amazing. Maybe the kids around where I live are just out of control or there's something in the water, but I expected at least one bad incident.

I can't speak for anyone at PA, but I believe they do it for the kids.

BTW, Woody, love the pic of Khoo.

August 29th, 2006, 12:04 AM
I'll have to do another charicature of Robert when I find a good picture. It doesn't look enough like him to me. Looks more like Slick from SinFest if he had an asian heritage.

August 29th, 2006, 01:58 AM
Why do I see Woody and Ted winding up in someone's Sims 2 game soon?

August 29th, 2006, 02:38 AM
Honestly, I think its the one panel limitation...

While your comic is great and fantastic, and one of the ONLY sites I check on a daily basis. The issue I think is, penny arcade has continuity in a way...

Or at least as far as I have seen...

Your comic is one joke, and that is great, it's a hell of alot harder to do the joke in one single panel than a multiple panel strip, but I honestly think that is WHY they have gotten attention... I can't tell you how many times I have seen refrences to the site on newsaskew because of a Kevin Smith refrence, they cover not only gaming news, but more of a satire of themselves I guess...

I dunno, it all makes sence in my head, and I hope you get what I am saying Woody, I am not TRYING to insult you, or dog the comic in any way shape or form, I am just I guess trying to say why I think they would be picked up for say a game, because the multiple panel image lends itself to an old scool side scrolling idea of a game...

Hoppe this makes sence :>

August 29th, 2006, 03:01 AM
I don't see it as a limitation. I see it as a challenge. And I have said countless times that GU would probably be more widely accepted if I did it as a multi-panel, serial comic. So, I'm not sure exactly why you see that statement as a potential insult when I've said it myself.

Breandan, I know for a fact that it wouldn't be the first time. As a matter of fact, I've been emailed screenshots from folks who skinned in GU t-shirts for thier Sims.

August 29th, 2006, 05:44 AM
I dunno, it's admirable that PA are going to roll their sleeves up and get stuck into producing a game, and it is logical, gamers should know what makes a good game. However, it's also pretty risky PA have a lot of reputation to live up to and the fall will hurt if they have one. Im not sure Id worry so much about them losing their touch as losing face; they've set themselves quite a task.

That being the case, good luck to them I say.

No, I wanted to make sure I CMA ;>

And I TOTALLY Agree with you, which is why I read this site, and follow the site, as opposed to PA, which I only catch a comic once every couple months...

I have to agree with it being a challange, because you have to tell a joke in one fell swoop, as opposed to 6 or so, and not to mention, I find your backgrounds to be a tad more apealing to the eyes...

I dunno, you are an artist man, I have had issues before trying to express the 90mph thoughts that are limited to my 10mph hands when it comes to typing ;>

As for your whore.whore comment, I bout died when I saw that, because whenever we look at the bed to find one of our many furry creatures on it... Either my wife or myself find some excuse to use the phrase, uhm, Honey, there's WHORE on the bed again ;>

Thank you for many countless hours of humor and conversation :>

I like PA, and I like their fund-raising, but.. honestly.. the PA Presents series, the PAX exposition, and now their video game.. what's next? PA Breakfast Cereal? A full-functional Fruit F-..... juicer?

There's "so much" and there's "too much" and they're really leaning toward the latter.

August 29th, 2006, 06:56 AM
I'm just worried that if they grow too big, they may lose perspective. And the very things I like about PA might get sacrificed in the wild unchecked growth of their IP.What I think would be great is if Tycho & Gabe hate the Penny Arcade games and do a lot of comics about it. :D

though you have to ask yourself if theyre not doing it more for other people than themselves, the fundraiser, the 10k, those are selfless, do you really think its that easy to lose sight of your own goals when its pretty much two people working together?

"too much" in this case i would probably say maybe... a car?
a game made with and by gamers isnt a bad idea, why not have a suggestions box for it? it will be like that G.A.P thing playstation.com has (gamer advisory panel.... though it has more than 10k members, so i dont think its a "panel" per se) except we actually make a difference.

August 29th, 2006, 08:48 AM
Meh, I think people are really over-thinking this. As they said themselves, the game thing is something that they've had a lot of companies bugging them about.

They chuck some small indie company the rights, and it's win win. PA stops getting people nagging for rights, the company isn't too big (so the whole book debacle should be avoided) and some indie company gets a legup. If the whole thing works out, then three cheers, if not, PA has a little more peace and quiet.

As far as I'm concerned, the karma balances out. Remember people, that site is the bread and butter of at least 7 people (Tycho+Partner, Gabe+Partner+kid, Robert), we should be applauding them for not selling out more. Especially when it's countered by the almost on request Wallpapers Gabe has been doing of favourite scenes in the comic for free, and the products that are obviously being demanded by their more consumer based fans (yes, I'm guilty of owning a PA mug ^^; )

And come on, who wouldn't want to hold a PAX? Imagine 20,000 people turning up to your games night? That would be awesome!

August 29th, 2006, 08:59 AM
I think it's amusing that almost any time someone gets successful, all the unsuccessful people will accuse them of selling out. I'm not meaning Woody, in this case, not at all, but instead the hundreds (thousands?) of posters across the internet.

We live in a society that espouses capitalism. If so many people have a problem with others being successful (whether it's Penny Arcade, Microsoft, Apple, whoever) then why don't they just move to a socialist or communist country? I spent the summer in Norway, which is a bit of a socialist democracy, and it's hard to accuse very many there of selling out. Shops are small, bands are relatively unknown outside of Norway (and not ultra-famous within it). The one almost-monopoly I can think of is their phone company, TeleNor, which is a crap service.

Our country teaches its children to grow up and become successful, but so many people who consider themselves unsuccessful just can't stand to see someone succeed. And I would call them unsuccessful, because if they were successful, as in content with their lives, they would not see the need to complain about such trivial, inane matters when our country suffers from problems like low standards in education, extreme homelessness, etc.

August 29th, 2006, 10:04 AM
LOL Great comic Woody... I bet PA is laughing at it.

August 29th, 2006, 10:53 AM
I think some folks are making assumptions as to the intent of comments like "I worry about them growing too big" and "losing perspective". Please make note that I don't feel they've grown too big yet. And, I don't see indications that they've lost perspective yet. "Yet" is a big word and it doesn't have to be read as an innevitability. But, it DOES mean "hasn't happened as of this moment in the space/time".

So, what is "too big" and "lost perspective".?Garfield. It's a comic by committee. Every decision run past a panel of "experts" and weighed against it's universal appeal rather just being a comic for comics sake. It's a cat eating lasagne, who hate's mondays, and has a love/hate relationship with... well... everything. Just let it be itself, regurgitated jokes or not. Hell, Davis doesn't even draw/ink/color the comic anymore. Whether he still writes the comic is kind of sujective. You know, because of the whole committee thing.

I'm a tremendous Penny Arcade fan, but that doesn't make them untouchable. I tend to make as much fun of the stuff I like as the stuff I do not.

August 29th, 2006, 11:53 AM
Great Comic Woody.

There are 2 comics I read every day ......... well every OTHER day when my schedule dictates. They are GuComics and Penny-Arcade. I do understand, and love the pokes and jabs that you webcomics take at eachother, and it makes me giddy ( YES GIDDY ) when I see ya write about eachother. It's all in fun, and that's what makes both of your sites so entertaining.

Here's to many years yet to come for GU, and here's to PA whorin' it to the MAX.

Jesus if F'n Metal, baby!

I've been following this comic site for a good few years now. What's always impressed me is your sheer gumption to poke fun at any topic and stand by your convictions. Only once have I seen you retract a comic due to sensitive content. The fact that you're even willing to poke fun at other web artists show that no topic escapes your notice. The guys at PA would have no reason to retaliate to this and I think they would find it rather humorous as well.

Keep up the good work Woody, I'll keep visiting your site everyday like a crack-addict looking for his hit. :)

August 30th, 2006, 12:26 PM
I only feel okay poking at PA, because I routinely trounce myself and I know the PA guys have a good sense of humor. When I don't enjoy something, I tend to clam up so that my opinion doesn't overly bias other gamers. That's not always the case (See "Moderate This")... **whistles**

Which is the one I've retracted?

They kind of poked fun at themselves for the same thing, in their comic today.
