Anyone here have it or played it? I played the demo through and i loved the graphics. Gameplay was pretty good, and strikecraft are much more usefull than in the original. Towards the end of the originanl, its all about destroyers and ion frigates, with cruisers there just to take a beating. Also the boosted the AI of your units so they make better choices about who to target so you don't suddely have your interceptors taking on a frigate when they should be attacking enemy fighters.

Only 2 things i saw that i didn't like from the demo.
1.) No customizable strike groups. You can't mix and match different numbers or types into a single formation. Fighters come in set groups, and you can't order individual fighters.
2.) No formations. They took out one of my favorite features from the origianl and every fighter group just flys in delta formation. Can't use X formation against strike craft, and no claw or sphere formation for capitol ships.

I played through it. The changes you mention are the big ones. Fighters are made in "groups" now. I was able to get used to no formations or strike groups. There are a few options in this area, but I didn't see much difeerence when I changed the tatics.

The smaller ships are much more useful now. With a good mixture of fighters and bombers, you can go against a few large ships and do some good damage. They did change the drone ship to a gun ship, but same pupose, take out small ships.

Overall, I liked the game. I found that I used a good mixture of all types of ships in the battles. It wasn't just the large ships (seeming as you are very limited to the numbers you can build). Also, a real bonus. You don't have to wait forever after beating a mission to collect all the remaining resources. They are automatically collected for you when you end a mission

1)Well you make strike groups out of groups of fighters. it's not like you wanted 1 ship to do much else but pull larger ships into a trap.

2)You do have 3 formations, based on your tactics (aggressive, neutral, defensive), and also tactics based on where you put your various ship types (can come in handy) but to be honest, only wall, claw, delta and occasionally sphere were actually worth using for the majority of the time.

Homeworld 2 is essentially Homeworld with better graphics, new units and some nice interface changes (to make it easier for people like me who can only do a few things at a time ). I haven't played a lot of it because I don't really have the time unfortunatly (too much EverQuesting ).

Sphere was a great formation for bombers if the enemy wouldn't really go after them. Your units would just encircle the enemy and just sit there and fire. Also i found it was a good formation for defenders and multigun corvettes when they are escorting a cruiser or carrier.

Also i noticed that tactics (evasive, nuetral, and aggressive) only changed how they picked targets. Evasive runs away, nuetral returns fire, and aggressive actively seeks targets. In the original, fighters would do minimal evasive patterns on nuetral, and on evasive they broke formation and just flew evasive patterns while attacking.

Yeah sphere was the best escort formation, I knew about the surrounding the enemy bit but often that'd just make my units sitting ducks

Hmm. I was thinking of getting this, since I'm a big Homeworld fan.. I've been playing a LOT of Cataclysm lately. The game's a blast. But if things are like you say, I may wait for Cataclysm 2.
I think that Japan actually pays people like Fred Gallagher to leave their country as soon as possible.
